Causes of Stryker Hip Implant Complications

Stryker recalled two of its metal hip implant devices, the Rejuvenate and the ABG II modular-neck stem. The recall was based on possible design flaws, which caused potential hazards including:

  • Excessive metal debris from the metal-on-metal friction of the device
  • Increased metal ion generation in the joint space surrounding the implant

The metal-on-metal design can further lead to painful side-effects, premature failure and the need for revision surgery.

Symptoms of Defective Stryker Hip Implants

Symptoms of a defective hip implants include:

  • Decreased mobility
  • Severe pain in the hip, groin or thigh
  • Swelling around the hip implant area
  • Loosening of the implant

The excessive metal debris gathering in the soft tissue around the implant area may also cause metallosis. Additional symptoms of metallosis may include:

  • Inflammation around the implant area
